What Are Organic Cosmetic – Are They Worth The Cost?
Today my friends, I would like to discuss “Organic Cosmetics” what they are, what it means, and how it benefits you. Organic cosmetics are products that are made with organic ingredients and without harsh chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers according to the EPA (Environment Protection Agency).
Many manufacturing are misleading when it comes to labels on the back of organic cosmetics. Manufacturers may use the word “organic” but scientific meaning of is “containing carbon.” “Organic” also means according the Random House Roget’s Thesaurus – “natural and non-synthetic.”
In order for cosmetics to “truly be organic,” the Organic Consumers Association suggests that all the cleaning and conditioning ingredients be made from organic materials, the manufacturing process should be simple and ecological.
Non-agricultural water like floral water or botanical water should not be used on labeling because some of the floral waters used in the cosmetics are the water by-product of essential oils distillation after all the essential oil has been removed.
Unfortunately, companies mislead consumers by listing floral waters, botanical water extracts, and infusions first. Then they list on the label the synthetic surfactants ingredients that in fact make up the core of the product, which is confusing and misleading to the consumer.
Products that are created and use a natural process–using floral waters in cosmetics and skin care products that have been produced using a distillation process or water only base (they have no alcohol or synthetic surfactants ingredients) are truly organic. This process takes longer and is usually more expensive to buy and produce but, this is legitimate “organic”.
The old saying “you get what you pay for” certainly holds true when we are comparing organic cosmetics.
The skin is the largest organ in the body and what we apply to our skin affects our health in many ways. When we apply toxic chemicals to our skin they absorb into our bodies and affect every organ which could influence disease and havoc to the normal functioning and balance of a healthy person. If we do this day after day, month after month, year after year, think of the damage that could occur from dangerous toxic chemicals.
Just check your products labels out very carefully to make sure you are getting “truly organic.” I would even suggest if you have any doubt to contact the company and ask them questions to make sure that you are getting a “true organic product.” There are legitimate organic and chemical free cosmetics companies that are producing excellent products!
