Organic Herbs that You can Grow in Your Own Garden
Some organic herbs that can grow in your garden that can be very beneficial to your diet include some of the herbs that you regularly consume.
1. Basil
Basil is one of the best and most revered of the herbs around the world. Especially sweet basil is an extraordinary herb that is not only special in its aroma, but is also known for its unique flavor. Basil can be used quite efficiently with most cooking methods and is great for cooking. It is widely known for its medical uses and forms an essential ingredient of deodorants, and different medicinal applications including in drugs like ant-arthritic or anti-inflammatory drugs.
It is also important to grow your own basil from the seed sown by you. This helps ensure that you have the best basil crop. Basil can also be easily grown form the clippings of the plant itself. If you wish to do this, you can grow them form a set of fresh stalk of the plants. You should also make sure that you take the right steps towards making your basil crop fruitful.
2. Chives
Chives is another herb that you can grow in your backyard. Much like the other plants that grow at their roots, it is also one of those plants that drive away harmful insects like the mosquitoes or aphids form your garden. This herb is also rich in sulfur and can act as an antibiotic. Thus, when ingested, chives can show anti-inflammatory or digestive properties.
Dried or fresh chives also make for excellent additions to soup and other dishes when consumed regularly in your diet. Thus, chives make it easier for you to enhance the flavor of your soup. The plant tends to degrade after several years of growth and makes it essential to divide and replant the clumps after several years of service.
To get the most out of your fresh chive plants, it is essential that you harvest the chives form the base of the plants. This will encourage the growth of the plant and preserve the chives until the end of the season. Seasonings that go well with chives include oil, butter or vinegar.
3. Cilantro / Coriander
Coriander is a herb that contains high amounts of anti-oxidants, especially vitamin C. This is in conjunction with several other useful minerals and vitamins. In addition to this, the herb has a revitalizing feel to it and aids digestion while relieving the symptoms of inflammation that may cause other problems in your body. Coriander seeds are also known for their positive impact on the blood sugar levels. This ultimately helps reduce the stress on your liver and other organs. These also help the production off insulin as well as promote improved digestion.
The powerful flavor of coriander helps make an excellent difference to the seasoning of meats or other cooked dishes. You can re-sow the coriander leaves to help harvest the best plants throughout the season. One way to harvest coriander seeds is by clipping the leaves off the plant and then placing them upside-down in a paper bag. After a few days, the pods with the seeds will split and release the coriander seeds.
It is important that you keep your coriander plants tidy. Keep the base of the plants free from fallen leaves to prevent the leaves and stalks from catching fungal infections.
