15 Ways To Achieve A Greener Cleaner Home, Garden & Lifestyle!

When you first start to become aware of problems with the environment and our lifestyle choices, you often think about the kind of impact that you might be able to have. At first, you may think about making a few changes to your choices here and there, and feel good about it. But, during the process, you may find that you’re starting to realize more and more what you can do. Because when you start with one change, you soon notice the other things that could help you live a more eco-friendly life. However, sometimes, you just don’t know where to start.

Leading a more conscious, greener life can often help you to lead a healthier life overall. You just need to be able to know what changes to make, or what eliminations to focus on and you’ll get there. If you want to make a difference to the world and your immediate environment, start at home. There are so many ways that you can make your home life cleaner and greener – even out in the garden. Then, you may find that you can enjoy a healthier, happier, and greener lifestyle over all, with the knowledge that you’re doing your bit for the environment.

Inside The Home

First of all, you’re going to want to focus on some key efforts around the home. You probably already have your own cleaning routine down, but there are things that you can do that will make sure that your home is not only cleaner but a lot greener too.

Regular Spring Cleaning

Firstly, you’re going to want to focus on your spring cleans. And this doesn’t mean just carrying them out in spring either. Thorough house cleans should be carried out a few times a year, alongside your regular cleaning schedule. To make sure that they’re healthy, you should look into the right eco-friendly products for the job, and try to avoid toxic chemicals where you can. Then, you’ll know your house is healthy and green.

Your Floors

As a part of your regular cleaning schedule, you’re going to want to focus on your floors too. When you have kids and pets, you can often find that your floors are a breeding ground for germs and dirt. Lots of heavy traffic through the house can make your floors filthy. So, you should always make your hard flooring and carpets a priority to keep on top of on a regular basis.

Beating Germs

You should also do what you can to beat germs. You’re going to find them all over the house, but your kitchen and bathroom can be two of the most important rooms to keep germ free. The natural cleaning products that you use should be able to keep them at bay, meaning that you don’t have to resort to harsh chemicals. But, you may also want to try some fun home remedies too.

Your Energy Use

Then you’ve also got your home’s efficiency to think about. Having a green home doesn’t just involve keeping it clean with the right things, it also involves running your home in the most environmentally friendly way to reduce your impact. Things like controlled lighting and being mindful of the supplies you use will help, but you could also look into energy efficient solutions for your utility needs too.

Your Food Consumption

There’s also the matter of your personal consumption to consider too. When it comes to food, we can all often buy more than we need, which will often result in excessive waste. So, it’s important that you start to shop consciously and be sure only to purchase food items that you’ll actually use. If you do find that you have food waste, you should then look into the right recycling methods for it, like starting a compost heap that we will discuss later.

General Waste

And then you have the rest of your household waste. You should be doing what you can to make sure that you recycle as many items as possible. This guide on household recycling should help you to understand what you can and cannot recycle. Aiming to throw away as little as possible is a strong green goal to apply to your home.

Outside & In The Garden

Living a healthier, cleaner, and more green life isn’t just something that you can achieve while inside your home. There are definitely practices that you can apply to your outside living space too. If you want your life to be greener holistically, here are the outside efforts to focus on.

Compost

As we briefly touched on earlier, it’s always a good idea to recycle your food waste. Of course, in an ideal world, you wouldn’t have any food waste, or it would be very minimal. But, it’s only normal to acknowledge that you will have waste to dispose of. So, starting a compost heap could help with that. You won’t be able to use things like meat or bones, as they will attract pests, but natural products can be added to a compost heap that you can later use in your garden.

Collect Rainwater

Likewise, you may also want to think about collecting rainwater. During the summer months, we all want to water our plants to make sure that they can grow, and that our gardens look healthy. But, that will use up a lot of the filtered water we produce for drinking and eating with. So, why not consider collecting rainwater to use instead? With a purpose made tank, you can collect it naturally wish ease and use it for watering your garden.

Encouraging Wildlife

While out in your garden, you may also want to think about the things you can do that will encourage wildlife. Part of living a green and environmentally-friendly lifestyle is having a minimal impact on the earth as possible. And as we share it with a range of creatures, it’s only fair that we make room for them too. Plus, by encouraging nature in your garden, it will also look gorgeous too.

Avoiding Pesticides

This leads us nicely onto the next point. If you want to be able to enjoy a garden that attracts wildlife, you should always avoid using any kind of chemical in your garden. Even though some pesticides claim that they are safe for use among animals, you’re still effectively poisoning nature. So, you should make sure that you stay away from them altogether.

Choosing Wisely

If you are set on living as green as possible, you’re going to want to start making greener choices. And this is definitely the case when it comes to the things you put in your garden. Take a look at the different options for eco-friendly garden furniture, along with decorative items and even planters. If you want to make sure your impact on this earth is as minimal as possible, you have to make your consumer choices count.

Growing Your Own

Finally, you may also want to think about growing your own fruits and vegetables too. This is not only a great way to make the most out of your garden, but reduce your need for consumption too – giving you a healthier, happier, greener lifestyle all round. Plus, growing organic vegetables can be a lot of fun. Not only will you get to grow and eat your own food, but it can also be a fantastic hobby too.

The Wider Environment

Then there are things that you could do out in the wider environment that can also benefit both your home and your lifestyle. Some of these things are going to benefit you directly, and others will take time. But putting your efforts into one or some should boost your cleaner, greener living.

Starting An Allotment

Firstly, you could ensure that your neighborhood is as green and as environmentally friendly as possible by taking that enjoyment of growing your own out into the community. Starting a community gardening group and allotment can be great for your entire area. Not only will you be able to get other people involved in the green initiatives, but great a lovely community space too.

Teaching & Leading

You may also want to think about sharing your passions, experience, and knowledge with others in the community. You may not be a teacher, but you can educate others with what you do know – especially if you’ve applied changes and you’ve seen real benefits. Speaking at local events or even going into schools could really benefit your community and your entire lifestyle overall. So why not look into ways that you can share your passion with your local area.

Volunteering

Finally, you may also want to think about volunteering your time. When you help others, you can not only enrich their lives but connect and share experiences too. You may want to look into helping out in your local community, aiding with local eco and environmental groups and events, or even starting your own sort of group or project that can benefit the environment and green living overall. Then, you can use the things you take away from your venture to apply to improve your own home and lifestyle too.
