7 Ways to Introduce Kids to a Green Lifestyle

There ihow to introduce kids to a green lifestyles no secret to the successful parenting. You don’t need to apply any psychological practices or reading tons of books on the subjects. The best way to teach your children about healthy and green living is to set an example yourself. Kids in early age are extremely perceptive. When they see you exercising healthy and green lifestyle, they will be likely to develop similar attitude.
However, children tend to either model or rebel against the existing order. You need to approach your kids with care and consideration. From domestic cleaning to recycling, you need to make green practices interesting and entertaining.

1. Be active

Your children will appreciate the nature better, if they spend more time around it. Organize regular outdoors activities. You have many options – take a walk, go on trips, bike and hike or simply play with your kids.

2. Switch to Public Transportation

Talk with your kids about the hazards of carbon emissions and why is important to use public transportation. Show your commitment to the “green” alternatives by using your car only when necessary. Otherwise, take the train, bus or the metro.

3. Involve Your Kids

Children, especially younger ones are curious about the grown – up activities and are eager to help. You can give them small tasks like throwing the food scraps in the compost bin. Do some recycling together. Beware of the items with sharp edges such as cans and glasses that might hurt your little one.

Some children prefer assisting in the house cleaning. With the green cleaning products, you will not need to worry about the dangerous chemicals that can harm your little one. If your kids are not interested or excited about the green lifestyle, make the eco – friendly activities fun. Turn the everyday chores into a game.

4. Let them Grow Their Greenery

Your children will develop an environmental conscious thinking by encouraging them to grow an indoor plant. In this way your children will feel directly responsible for the nature. The bean seed is a classic choice. Your kid will be able to see how the plant develops under their care. Create a garden in your backyard where you can grow herbs and vegetables. The experience of producing their food, will give them a glimpse at the sustainable living.

5. Shop Wisely

Help your children develop healthy and eco – friendly shopping habits. Take them to the farmer’s market. There they can see where the food comes from and meet with the people who grow it. They will get used to shopping organic and fresh products, instead of going for the junk food.

6. Reduce Consumption

Pick durable and good – quality toys. Don’t spoil your kids with tons of gifts. This will only result in consumerist behavior. You should also ask family and friends to check with you first before giving big gifts. When cleaning the closet, discuss with your child what toys they no longer need and then donate them.

7. Promote Conservation

Each your children conservation practices from early age. Let them know that small actions like switching off lights and turning off water when brushing their teeth are required.

    LOVE IT! I have 5 kids and our transition to an Organic lifestyle was easy because we did most of the transition TOGETHER! They helped shop, cook, repurpose, etc. Now, instead of my kids saying…hey, can we go buy that…they ask, “how can we make that”. I think I may have created hoarders in the process though!
