Top Eco-Friendly Packaging Trends for 2019

For product packaging enthusiasts, the year 2019 has brought innovative new options to experiment with. There are many packaging trends introduced in the market today, which when used can positively contribute to the environment. Reducing or replacing materials in packaging can have a range of optimistic effects. For example, using less materials will lower a product’s weight, further reducing its smaller carbon footprint. Also, using non-toxic biodegradable materials is safer for people and the environment at large. Let us discover the top eco-friendly packaging trends for 2019, their benefits and why you should incorporate them in your daily life.

1. Sustainable Wood

One of the most frequently used materials throughout human history, wood is beautiful, natural, renewable, durable, reusable, flexible, and carbon neutral. Bateel, the world’s only gourmet date grower, producer and seller, offers organic dates in elegant wooden gift boxes. Made of sustainable wood that is handcrafted to guarantee exceptional quality and design, these luxurious wooden boxes can be reused after savoring the delicious treats.

2. Recyclable Material

Nowadays, many brands are replacing non-recyclable plastics in their packaging with biodegradable substitutes like cardboard and paper. A division of L’Oréal USA, Seed Phytonutrients uses a recycled and compostable, paper-based pump bottle designed for use in the shower. This packaging extends to all their products including shampoos, conditioners, and cleansers.

3. Leaf Plates

Taking inspiration from the original plates our ancestors used, Leaf Republic have come up with packaging products made from leaves and recycled plastic. The lid is made from bioplastic, while a three-layer natural bowl is made of leaves and water-proof leaf-made paper. It does not contain any synthetical additives, coloring, glue – and biodegrades in just 28 days!

4. Plantable Packaging

Smart brands are adding environmentally friendly twists to everything they can, including plantable packaging. Pangea Organics, which creates 100% plant-based beauty products, devised a clever way of incorporating organic seeds into the boxes. When the consumer has removed their product from its packaging, they can slip off the label, soak the box in water and just plant it in the earth.

5. Reusable Bag

A fine example of smart and eco-friendly packaging, Puma, a leading manufacturer of athletic and casual footwear, introduced its ‘Clever Little Bag’ back in 2010 which is still being used. The minimalistic idea of footwear being wrapped in a simple cardboard structure held in place by a reusable bag is estimated to save more than 60% of resources as compared to traditional bag manufacturing processes.

Other materials that are becoming increasingly popular include more unusual ones, like fungi and algae. Ensuring the product’s packaging is environment-friendly not only shows the company’s commitment to the customers’ preferences, but it also indirectly shows their consideration towards the environment. Brands like Bateel and L’Oréal have set an example to others how minimal, eco-friendly options can be effective in inspiring trends amongst the community.

I like the leaf plates. We use something similar for big catering events at work, and they work well, and are less wasteful than paper or plastic!

  2. There are just so many option out there that are not plastic based or unsustainable – I read today about the development of a form of biodegradable plastic made from cactus plants. It is all very encouraging. #GoingGreen
