The Complete Guide on Biophilic Design

Leading a sustainable lifestyle simply means going back to our roots and being mindful of our decisions. Whether it’s being aware of where your food comes from or designing a home that is energy-conscious, there are many ways that you can make adjustments so that your actions have a positive impact.

One way to promote this positive impact is by incorporating biophilic design into your home. Biophilic design is based on the idea of biophilia. Biophilia is a hypothesis that humans are attracted and connected to nature. Something as simple as starting at the ocean can conjure up any number of emotions within us.

This connection with nature is often lost in architecture and decor. We build offices with the intention of fitting in as many desks and shutting out the outside world. We move into houses with beautiful gardens and then shut the windows to keep them out.

What is Biophilic Design?

Biophilic design is a way of creating a space that embraces this natural connection with nature. There are 14 patterns of biophilic design or 14 ways that we can embrace this natural relationship. These patterns are not rules, but suggestions. They are meant to be a set of guidelines that make you take a second look at how you decorate your home.

Some patterns are as simple as creating a visual connection with nature by adding plants to the interior of your home. Others may be something you haven’t thought of like embracing a natural thermal and airflow variability by opening windows or programming your HVAC system.

To help teach you about these patterns and how to incorporate them into your home, ApartmentGuide has a guide on biophilic design. Read through to find which patterns you already have and which ones you can add to your space.
