Vitamin D — Sunshine Vitamin & The Health Benefits


Today my friends I would like to discuss an essential Vitamin which is D and how important it is to our bodies. Since we are in the winter season when Vitamin D deficiencies become more of a problem.  Vitamin D is extremely important for all of us to maintain good health, also to prevent many potential health problems, and there has been so much new research that shows many new health benefits that we were not aware of until recently. I am going to share some these discoveries with you. So set back relax and listen to my spell. I promise to try make it interesting.

Vitamin D is both a nutrient we eat and a hormone our bodies make. Few foods are naturally rich in vitamin D so the biggest dietary sources of vitamin D are fortified foods and vitamin supplements. Fortified foods such as cow’s milk, soy milk, breakfast bars, some cereals are the most common. The few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D are as the dried versions of shiitake mushrooms, fish such as sockeye salmon, herring, mackerel, catfish, sardines, and tuna.

Although we may not realize how much of a role the sun plays in our health, even indoors on a sunny day the sun’s reflected rays give us crucial vitamin D. (Click Here to Buy SAD Soother Vitamin D) During the winter especially in cold regions the lack of sunshine can cause the winter blues.The body also manufactures vitamin D from cholesterol, through a process triggered by the action of sunlight on skin, its nicknamed, “the sunshine vitamin.”  Yet many people do not make enough vitamin D from the sun, among them, people who have a darker skin tone, who are overweight, who are older, who cover up when they are in the sun, and are correctly applying sunscreen, these are reduce our ability to absorb vitamin D by more than 90 percent.

Osteoporosis, or thinning bones, is a serious condition that can result in tremendous pain with fractures. Risk factors for osteoporosis include aging, being female, low body weight, low sex hormones such as during menopause, smoking, and some medications. There are no symptoms of this bone disease until you fracture a bone. Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis include Vitamin D and calcium, and regular exercise.

Recent studies have shown that too little Vitamin D may trigger breast cancer. At the 2010 “Diagnosis and Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency” conference sponsored by the University of Toronto School of Medicine, Dr. Cedric garland announced that breast cancer can be “eradicated” by Vitamin D. He presented research showing that vitamin D is crucial for healthy cell growth, and people who get plenty of it (which means daily doses of 2,000 IU or more for healthy individuals) can prevent cancer.  In addition to its growing evidence that getting some extra vitamin D can help lower the risk of colon cancer.

In 2009 a comprehensive review of 22 different clinical studies conducted revealed that a definite link between Vitamin D deficiency and chronic pain. Vitamin D deficiency can cause joint and muscle pain.  A recent study at the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine’s (AOSSM) annual meeting now underway in San Diego has linked too little vitamin D in the body to an increase of muscle injuries in athletes. This study was based on NFL football players.

The heart is basically a large muscle, and like skeletal muscle, it has receptors for vitamin D. So perhaps it’s no surprise that studies are finding that inadequate vitamin D may be linked to heart disease.

Another recent breakthrough–breaking news that scientists have discovered another great benefit of getting enough of Vitamin D through sunshine and supplements is helping to clear out plaques  in the brain associated with the dreaded, mind-robbing disease Alzheimer’s and dementia.  According to research just published in BioMed Central’s open access journal Fluids and Barriers of the CNS (central nervous system), a lack of Vitamin D has been suspected to play a important role in age related memory problems.

As I researched this information I was quite amazed at the future possibilities that Vitamin D may add to many serious health conditions. There is no doubt that Vitamin D is one vitamin that we should all make sure we get enough of, but without a supplement we probably aren’t.
