What’s New in the World of Planet Friendly Period Products?

Move over tampons and pads, there are a bunch of new, planet-friendly period and green natural feminine products these days! Keep on reading to find out the details of our favorite ones.

They include:

  • A ton of new menstrual cups beyond the Diva Cup
  • The Ziggy Cup (a reusable period sex option)
  • Period panties and cloth pads that actually work well
  • More organic pad and tampon options

#1: Way More Menstrual Cup Options

Most people switch to a menstrual cup because they’re looking for a planet-friendly alternative to tampons.

The Keeper Cup, made from latex was the first modern-day menstrual cup. Around 20 years ago, the first cups made from silicone came onto the market with the introduction of the Lunette Cup, Moon Cup and Diva Cup.

These “big 3” still dominate the scene, but there are plenty of other options out there these days. If you take a quick look on Amazon for “menstrual cup,” you’ll notice that there are 100+ options. Then among these, there are various size, stem and color options too.

Why consider one of the newer period cups? If you’re anything but average, you may have better luck trying one of them. There are menstrual cups if you…

  • Have a high, or low cervix
  • Have a very heavy period
  • Are a teenager
  • Find that the firmner cups give you cramps
  • Are nervous about being able to remove it
  • Etc.

While this is certainly a good thing, the only real problem is choosing the right cup for you. I recommend taking a quick menstrual cup quiz to help you out with that. Here is one of them you can check out:

#2: The Ziggy Cup

For many years, if you wanted to have sex during your period, your best option was the Instead Soft Cup. It’s basically a flat, flexible disc that fits right below your cervix and most people find that it works pretty well.

The only problem with this is that the Soft Cup is disposable. This means that it’s not great for the environment, and it can also get kind of expensive if you use them all the time.

In the past year or two, Intimina has come out with the Ziggy Cup. It’s very similar to the Soft Cup, but it’s made from the same material as most menstrual cups (medical grade silicone), making it reusable for at least a couple of years.

Finally, a planet-friendly period sex option! Learn more about the Ziggy Cup at the company website.

#3: Premium Period Panties and Cloth Pads

Next up on our list of planet-friendly period products are premium period panties and cloth pads. While these products have been around for years, the quality of them hasn’t necessarily been such that you’d actually want to use them! Think leaking, ugly designs, etc.

Some of our favorites include the following.

Period Panties
  • Modibodi (Australia)
  • Anigan (USA)
  • Hesta Organic (USA)

Of the three, Modibodi is the option we love. They come in a huge range of sizes and style options, and actually look a whole lot like regular underwear.

You can buy light absorbency ones which are similar to pantyliners, or you can opt for ones that equivalent to something like a heavy pad. You can check them out here: Modibodi Period Panties Review.

Reusable Cloth Pads
  • Blushing Bluebird (Canada)
  • Luna Pads (Canada)
  • Party in my Pants Pads (USA)

#4: Organic Pads and Tampons

The last planet-friendly period option are organic pads and tampons. Although these products have been available for a while, there are a far more choices today.

This means cheaper prices and also wider availability. A quick tip related to this.

Many people look for organic disposables at their local health shop, or organic store. However, you’ll usually find that they’re very expensive at these places. Amazon usually makes a better option, particularly when you buy a set of three boxes for example.

Be sure to check customer reviews for these products first because quality varies considerably.
