Health Benefits of Ginger, Tea Tree Oil, Cinnamon, & Mint

Today I would like to discuss more about natural remedies and their natural abilities to help prevent and heal many health ailments. Many times herbs and natural remedies can heal your body without the many and sometimes dangerous side effects of chemical prescription drugs. I believe these natural herbs and remedies were put on our planet to help us stay healthy and to heal our bodies if we use them properly. So sit back relax and listen closely–you just might find the right remedies to help you stay healthy or to help with a current health condition.

1. Ginger

Used as a healthy remedy for centuries, the ginger in your home can actually help with many modern ailments. Ginger has any health benefits and may be one of the most important plants used in herbal medicine, it is certainly one of the most used. Ginger is often included in many herbal decongestants and can help to minimize the symptoms of respiratory conditions, colds and allergies and acts as an antihistamine. Ginger contains anti viral, anti toxic, and anti fungal properties, and is used for the prevention of and treatment against the common cold.

Ginger displays anti inflammatory properties and can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and various other muscular disorders.  In some cases the root of ginger has proven to be a highly effective form of treatment, even more so than the NSAID’s that are traditionally prescribed by many physicians.

Ginger is available in capsule and liquid extract.  Use can also use ground ginger in a tea or fresh chewable slices.  Caution: Some people can have an allergic reaction, but in most cases this is topical, but in rare cases a serious reaction could occur such as difficulty breathing, throat closes up or your lips, tongue or face swell. Get medical attention immediately.

2. Cinnamon:

Is great for bad breath, snoring, nausea, and kills germs. Studies have shown that a half of a teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. Cinnamon can also help with diabetes, arthritis, and even leukemia. According to several studies including one in CHU Hopital Nord in France in 2008, found that cinnamon has antiseptic properties and can kill bacteria. Is great to use as a hand sanitizer– look for products containing cinnamon oil.  For bad breath mix with cool water and use as a mouthwash. If you use it as a tea, mix 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder with a cup of boiling water.

3. Tea Tree Oil:  

Works very well topically (do not use internally) for nail fungus, ringworm, athlete’s foot and other infections. Tea tree oil has natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. and is quite effective when applied to infected tissue.  Can also be use for head lice as a natural oil base and supposedly can relieve vaginal yeast infections.  Try using 1/2 tea oil and 1/2 olive oil  because tea tree oil can irritate the skin especially in sensitive areas of the body.  Caution: Do not swallow is toxic according the American Cancer Society.

4. Mint and Peppermint:

Mint comes in many varieties and has many medicinal qualities. Is great for indigestion, colic, cold,  flu, bad breath and can relieve intestinal spasms in colicky infants.   Because of its menthol, mint has a very good action over the digestive system, causing a small anesthesia of the gastric mucous membrane. It also stimulates digestion.  Mint can treat diarrhea, gastric fever or toxic infections. It stimulates the biliary secretion and helps the digestion of fats. Peppermint can aid in digestion by relaxing the intestines, soothing spasms and increasing healthy gastric secretions.

Because Mint’s antispasmodic and sedative properties it is recommended in cases of asthma, bronchitis, and flu, It is also highly recommended for sinusitis because menthol is a vasodilatator of the nasal mucous membrane. Mint oil is a powerful stimulant and tonic. It can be used as an inhalation in small amounts as well as for chest massages. It is also known for it ability to relieve mental fatigue, stress, depressive states and headaches can be ameliorated if mint oil is applied over the temples and back of head.

For infants -it is best used if the mother is nursing, by drinking mint tea diluted with 50% water about a 1/2 hour before nursing claims,  Pacific Northwest-based  Herbalist and nurse practitioner Gayle Eversole.  If the mother is not nursing then add 1 tsp of dried mint to a cup of boiling water and let steep for 10 minutes.

Essential Oil Peppermint can also be used as an insect repellent — mix a few drops in a cup of water and splash on your skin or just put a few drops on your body.  The strong sharp scent of mint can help to clear stuffed nasal passages.

Medicinal Plants and  Home Remediescan be very helpful for you and your families. I feel that the these remedies are God-given gifts and that we should utilize them the best way we can.
