probiotics friendly bacteria

Today my friends, I would like to discuss Probiotics. I feel it is important that you understand what they are, what they do for your digestive system and your whole body, and why it is important to have the proper balance.

What are Probiotics?

That’s a good question and here is the answer!  The literal translation of the word probiotics is “for life.” Probiotics are the good and friendly bacteria that are normal inhabitants of the intestinal tract. These helpful bacteria evolve over a person’s lifetime, changing in type and quantity as we age. The older we get the more we need.

The normal human digestive tract contains over 400 different species and more than 100 trillion total bacteria to have and  promote a healthy digestive system.

These friendly bacteria can do wonders for your digestive system. Probiotics are beneficial types of bacteria that can come from foods that are a health benefit. In nature probiotics cover raw foods and that is where wild animals get their supply. When we process or cook our foods, many are killed and need to be replaced.

Although the word bacteria is usually associated with germs and illness,  friendly bacteria help the help the body to function, maintain health and fight illness and disease– Bad or pathogenic bacteria on the other hand can cause imbalances and lead to illness and disease.

 What do probiotics do?

They have many important jobs in our body.

1. First they fight disease-causing bacteria throughout our digestive tract and help the whole digestive system to function properly, in fact they help the whole body function properly.

2. They speed healing and prevent the infection or injuries in our gut.

3. They produce enzymes that help digest our foods.

4. They heal the gut lining when it gets damaged.

5. They improve our body’s ability to make a protective coat called mucin, which prevents the inside of our digestive tract from being damaged by enzymes, acid, abrasion, and bacteria.

6. They manufacture B vitamins.

7. They make molecules that strengthen the immune functions.

What causes an imbalance of probiotics in our digestive system?

These are some of the most common reasons that someone has an imbalance of flora in their gut.

1. A poor diet and eating habits, eating processed foods with additives, or foods that contain antibiotics, hormones, and preservatives.

2. Environmental factors such as being exposed to toxins and pollution, drinking chlorinated water.

3. Lifestyle factors such as too much alcohol consumption, not getting enough of sleep.

4. Stress and disease.

5. Taking antibiotics as medical treatment.

6. Having a caesarean delivery.

7. Getting older.

What happens if we don’t have the proper amount or the right types of probiotics in our digestive system?

The imbalance of good flora can case many health problems starting with excessive gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, intestinal toxicity, poor absorption of nutrients. If the probiotic imbalance is left untreated the symptoms can become chronic and compromise the immune system which can lead to serious illness. Approximately 70% of the immune system is located in the digestive tract.

Physical problems can include a tendency to develop food and other allergies, leaky gut (damaged intestines that have openings in the gut wall allowing particles to get into the bloodstream), candida (yeast) problems such as thrush, skin yeast infections, low blood sugar with craving for carbohydrates, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, and poor digestion. We build up toxins in our body which is mostly released through the skin, this in turn will lead to skin problems such as eczema, itching, etc.

Now that we discussed what probiotics are, what causes the imbalance, and what could happen to your body — you know need to  get the proper balance of probiotics in your diet for good health!

Quote of the Day:   Let the states of equilibrium and harmony exist in perfection, and a happy order will prevail throughout heaven and earth, and all things will be nourished and flourish!
