1. Healthy Food — Make sure your food is GMO free, preservative free, contains no artificial or synthetic coloring or additives, and is locally grown and/or organic. Read labels before buying any product and do your research. It’s a great time of the year to get local fresh organically grown produce if you don’t have your own garden.

- 1/2 cup water, preferably spring water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 pints fresh-picked organic local blueberries, rinsed and patted dry
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 large local free range egg white
Directions — In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, water, and salt. Cook, stirring, until the sugar and salt have dissolved, about 3 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes.
In a blender, purée the blueberries with the syrup and lemon juice until very smooth (you may need to divide this into several batches if your blender is not extra-large). If desired, strain through a fine-mesh sieve for a smoother texture. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least 4 hours or overnight.
Churn in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s directions. Add the egg white, if using, during the last 2 to 3 minutes of churning.
E. What about the beverage? — Absolutely no sugary soda.
- Try organic lemonade
- Organic ice-tea made from organic tea bags – just use your favorite ice recipe with your favorite flavored tea such as blackberry tea but make sure you have organic tea bags and organic sugar
- Or how about good cold ice water
2. Recycle – Don’t use toxic plastic or styrofoam plates, cups, or eating utensils. Use regular dinnerware or at least recycled paper products. All those chemicals from the plastic and styrofoam leech into your hot foods and cause many health issues, not to mention the extra trash that they cause to our already overflowing land fills.
3. Reuse — For your decorations make sure that they are reusable for next year celebration! For a center piece use your own fresh flowers that you grew without any chemical pesticides or fertilizers — this will really impress your guest!
4. Have your own recycle station — Instead of just one trash can, just set up a disposal area. Label them accordingly for different kinds of trash. Use buckets or reusable tubs. One for food to use as compost, one for non-compost food such as meats, one for recycling paper products, and one any addition trash.
5. Use solar lamps — If your party is after dark – try using solar nights that will conserve energy and to add an extra festive touch make them red, white and blue.
I wish all of you a healthy and happy Independence Day and as we celebrate our country’s birthday make sure its a healthy and green way! Living green to me includes loving your country, your planet, yourself, and all living things enough to make sure that you are preserving our planet for our children and all future generations.
