The Natural Health and Medicinal Benefits of Goldenrod
Today me friends I would like to discuss the Goldenrod plant, some facts about this plant, the health and medicinal properties, and why it’s considered a great natural herbal remedy.
The goldenrod plant is a member of the daisy family and native to Europe and Asia. Goldenrod has many times unfairly blamed for producing hay fever in humans. The pollen producing weed that causes allergy problems is mainly caused by Ragweed a weed that springs up in late summer. and causes allergic effects from its pollen. Ragweed that produces huge amounts of pollen, and is carried by the wind.
Goldenrod’s heavy, sticky pollen is suited for dispersal by bees and is not likely to cause adverse effects to allergy suffers.
It grows wild in the woods and on hillsides in North America and when in bloom flowers with bright yellow displays, mainly in the summer months of July and August. This is when you can gather it and you can use any part of the plant that is above ground.
Golden rod is best brewed in a light tea. Pick some fully bloomed flowers and brew a light tea that you can sweeten with a little raw honey or your favorite natural sweetener to enhance the taste.
Goldenrod is a great herbal and very effective natural remedy for many health conditions! The goldenrod plant has saponins which are anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and flavonoids which are antioxidants and is tissue strengthening.
It is used by herbalists for a wide range of health disorder. Such as allergies, arthritis, colds and flu, inflammation of the bladder or urinary tract, kidney stones, laryngitis, sore throats, is very good at flushing the liver, and has been known to help prevent gallstones.
Liver: This plant is very good at flushing the liver. Add 2 teaspoons of leaves to 1 cup of hot water and let steep for 10-15 minutes.
Kidney and Urinary problems: Goldenrod is an aquaretic agent (promotes the loss of water from the body) most frequently used to treat urinary tract inflammation, bladder inflammation, and to prevent the development of kidney stones. Goldenrod’s aquaretic effects combined with both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties allow this herb to be used in connection with a variety conditions.
Cystitis: (bladder inflammation) can be remedied by pouring one cup of boiling water over two teaspoons of the dried herb and allowing to steep for ten minutes. Strain and drink this tea four times a day, reducing it as the symptoms go away. For an added boost that is also rich in vitamin C, make a blend of one ounce of goldenrod, three-quarters of an ounce of dandelion, three-quarters of an ounce of rose hips and three-quarters of an ounce of juniper berries.
Yeast Infections: The saponins make it helpful for yeast infections. A goldenrod tincture can be used to remedy a yeast infection by taking 20-40 drops up to four times a day. Use this for two weeks and then stop for three days. Repeat this if necessary.
Hemorrhoids: Due to goldenrod’s anti-inflammatory properties it’s great for hemorrhoids. A wonderful sitz bath can be made for the relief of hemorrhoids by pouring two cups of boiling water over a quarter cup of the dried herb of goldenrod. Allow this to steep for fifteen minutes and then strain. Add this to a five gallon tub of hot water twice a day for three days.
Skin Disorders: Goldenrod may also be used as a topical application to aid in healing injuries and skin conditions such as eczema. It can be used externally as first aid for wounds.
