Beginners Guide to Organic Gardening

Gardening for beginners

Looking out at that drab, dry dirt that you call a yard and wishing you had something nicer to look at? Or just wish your neighbor’s yard didn’t outshine yours? It’s time to whip your garden into shape. Grab your wallet and run to the nearest gardening store, because we’re about to help you create the best garden on your street! No experience? That’s okay! Beginners, start your engines, and let’s start scheduling those garden parties.

Tips on how to start and garden and maintain:

What do you need?

Before you get going, there are a handful of tools you’ll need to ensure success in the dirt. First and foremost, you need the best gloves. Your hands will be deep in the dirt, so avoiding splinters and rashes is the number one most important gardening tip. For your own safety, purchase a good pair of gloves to keep your hands protected. Look for a pair that isn’t too bulky, but has great durability.

After that, you need basic gardening tools. This includes a hand trowel for planting herbs, digging around in your corners, and removing those pesky weeds; a spade to dig holes for seeds and moving dirt; a rake to collect debris and leaves in the fall; and a hoe for your vegetable garden to turn the soil. A wheelbarrow and some sort of watering hose will make your life easier as well.

Now that you’ve got the right equipment, we’re ready to start!

Sturdy Soil

No matter the garden you’re looking to make, whether it be vegetable or flower garden, soil is arguably the most important part of a healthy garden. The soil should be a fertilizing soil so the plants receive all the nutrients they need.

Make sure the soil is well-balanced, though, so adding organic material to the soil can help even out the fertilizer. This organic material can be compost, shredded dead leaves or animal manure. Basically, any natural material to help the plants grow. The organic material also helps provide the plants with nitrogen and other nutrients that the plants will use to grow.

Fierce Flowers

Now it’s time to add that beautiful pop of color to your garden! There are two main kinds of gardens: vegetable gardens and flower gardens. One can provide food, the other will provide beauty.

If you’re okay with being patient, buy some seeds and watch the color burst into your garden over the span of a few weeks. If you are impatient, order some flowers from ProFlowers of the same variety that you’ve planted. This is a good way to test the waters to make sure you can keep some flowers alive before the ones you’ve worked so hard planting are ready. If you’re an extreme beginner, you can also order a garden kit to help you get started.

Very Healthy Veggies

There are a few things every gardener needs to keep in mind when it comes to maintaining a healthy vegetable garden. It’s a little different than a simple flower garden, as different vegetables require different nutrients. Most soils will have the nutrients necessary, but do some additional research to ensure each veggie you plant is getting everything it needs.

Another great way to ensure the vegetables enjoy the best soil is to rotate them occasionally. Once one plant has grown in one place for a while, rotate the seeds so they grow in a new spot with new soil. With the proper growth, the vegetables will be incredibly beneficial to your health!

Awesome Aesthetics

Now that your plants have grown, it’s time to decorate your garden! Make sure the garden is properly lit—if you use solar lights, that’s even better! Other great ideas include hanging lights above the gardens or adding a classy table and chairs set nearby. That way it becomes much easier for friends to come over and enjoy the labor of your hard work. You might even be able to make a lemonade with some of the mint from your vegetable garden for a nice touch!

Now that your garden is beautiful, don’t forget to keep up the maintenance! When you notice flowers dying, snip them off so they grow back nice and healthy. Make sure your garden also remains watered and fertilized so the plants have the proper nutrients to grow. Don’t let all your hard work go to waste. Now that you have the tips, keep that yard from turning into a dull brown again.

    1. Hi Deborah,
Thanks for sharing and I am so glad to be part of Healthy Happy Green & Natural blog hop. Have a wonderful week.

  4. Great tips ! Nothings better than a good pair of gardening gloves. My favorite are the rubber covered ones that the mud and water doesn’t go through when planting.

    1. Hi Matt,
I agree about the gloves. Without a good pair of gloves I feel naked when gardening. Thanks for reading and commenting on my article. Have a healthy happy blessed weekend. Marla
