5 Ways to Go Green with DIY Gifts and Creating Gifts of Love

Making homemade gifts for Christmas goes further and speaks louder than buying something because it makes your gifts one-of-a-kind, personal and memorable. When it’s an eco-friendly gift, there’s even more of a story behind it. And, you have control over the materials used, versus buying something from a company that’s taxing the environment. What’s more, it makes people feel good when they know they’re getting something that’s better for the planet.

5 Ways to Go Green DIY gifts

Let’s look at five types of green homemade holiday gifts to help spark some ideas this holiday season:

1. Pampering Gifts

Show someone you love them with a gift they can pamper themselves with, like an all-natural handmade holiday-themed bath bomb, soap, scrub or candle. It’s easy to make these goodies in batches and use them to gift several people. For a larger gift, you can combine one of each into a bath set and place them in a decorative basket.

The Internet is full of recipes for non-toxic pampering gifts, and you can make them holiday-themed using holiday fragrances like pumpkin spice, ginger or peppermint. Below of some more ideas for homemade pampering gifts to fill up your basket.

The sky’s the limit to personal care products that you can make. They will remember that you cared enough to take the time to make this special gift just for them. During the holidays, most craft stores carry soap and candle molds with holiday-themed shapes, like snowflakes, Christmas trees and stars.

2. Edible Gifts

When you can’t think of something to get for someone, make them a homemade holiday treat, because it’s something made with love that anyone can enjoy. It’s also easy to make this gift in a batch and give it to multiple people. While you could make cookies or candies with all-natural ingredients, a more unique idea is to gift people with a set of homemade holiday-themed cookie mixes.  I would highly recommend using organic mixes. This way, they can make their own with and have a variety of holiday flavors, like gingerbread, pumpkin spice and mint mocha chip. You can gift them in decorative holiday-themed bags with fancy gift tags to make it extra special.

3. Gifts You Can Drink

Many people feel there’s already enough sugar consumption in their lives during the holiday season, so why not create some decadent holiday tea blends to spice them up with something healthier?

You can mix:
  • Black tea with a blend of chai
  • Pumpkin pie spices to make pumpkin spice chai tea
  • Mix peppermint tea leaves with dried raspberries to make a mint-berry fusion.

Place the tea blends in homemade unbleached tea bags to help out the environment. Or, you can bag a homemade pumpkin spice chai latte blend and your loved ones can simply add water.

4. Decorative Gifts

Turn your trash into treasure by making Christmas decor items that not only lessen the toll on the environment, but also on your pocketbook. Christmas ornaments are a classic gift, but here’s some that use recycled materials you can make with your kids.

5. Wearable Gifts

Jewelry made with recycled materials and natural items like wood make for special gifts fashionistas can feel great about. There are instructions for how to make eco-friendly jewelry all over the Internet, and you’re sure to find something for any style you’re going for. If you feel you don’t have the time or the desire to make your own jewelry than try purchasing recycled handmade jewelry from Eye on Beauty Shop that is sure to please anyone on our list with her stunning selection of unique jewelry and many other products. I am sure you will sure to find the right gift for anyone on your list.

Creating Gifts They’ll Love

With homemade Christmas gifts, you’re not just giving something special; you’re also giving your time it took to create the item, which tells people they matter to you. When you make DIY gifts with the environment in mind, you are remembering the planet matters too.

Creating Gifts of Love

My husband and I feel that Christmas is about giving especially children to those that don’t have enough. So we make a rocking horse each year from scrap wood and as many recycled products as we can find. We make it for our local Join Hands group that provides for those that don’t have enough to make Christmas dinner or have money to buy their children gifts. It is our way of saying thank you and giving back to our community and God for providing for us and our many blessings. Below is a picture of our creation this year to some local little girl (since we did it with pink trim) that will receive this Christmas morning. We hope it makes some child very happy and just knowing that brings us joy.

As I close this article with my ideas of going green, making eco-friendly gifts, and homemade ones that are healthy, safe and good for the environment I want to say that we need to remember the meaning of Christmas. To me it’s not about what we are receiving but spreading the word of love as far as we can.

Remembering the true meaning of Christmas whatever your religious beliefs are! The meaning of Christmas is about love, hope, and promise a better world for all of us. Not about what we are going to get but what we need to give. My personal believes is the true meaning of Christmas is about the birth of Jesus and the love, hope and healing that he brought to this world and spread wherever he went.

I am not trying to push my personal religious believes on you but only asking you to help to spread the message that Christmas is about love, hope, giving and caring about others. When we give and have gratitude we are helping to heal the world and our world needs so much healing.

Giving to others whether it is time with a sick friend or relative, visitor a nursing home and spending time with some of the residents or an orphanage that have no family can be a wonderful and fulfilling experience.  Volunteering your time at a food kitchen that feeds the homeless, helping out a veteran in anyway you can that has falling on hard times and helping make their Christmas a little better. Just smiling at someone can make their day! Spreading hope and love to those that have none can make such a difference. Be kind to your family but also be kind and loving to all people and the spirit of Christmas could last all year. Wouldn’t that be wonderful??

I wish a healthy, happy and blessed Christmas and holiday season filled with love, joy, gratitude and good health!

I hope that you will spread the word of love, faith, hope and gratitude to all those you cross paths throughout the coming year and help bring healing to our troubled world that so much turmoil seems to be everywhere!

Please share this article to help spread the word of health, wellness and share the gift of love and gratitude!

  6. You know I am nodding away as I read this – we really have to get out of the BUY BUY BUY mindset and these ideas are what we need to encourage everyone to do this. As for your rocking horse gift – that is beautiful, both in itself and through your kindness in making it every year. That is what Christmas should be about for everyone, not a frenzy of consumerism.
