Detoxification: The Body Clean Up, Why, When and How

Who Hijacked Our Food?

Take a person from the year 1866 (that’s just 150 years ago) and plonk him in the middle of a modern day supermarket, and he would not be able to recognize the majority of the foods that are on the shelf. Since that time, we’ve added more than 3,000 additives to food, we’ve stripped natural products of all their nutritional value, we’ve created weird science fiction foods that have zero health value, and we’ve dumped sugar into everything like crazy.

Not only will that guy from 1864 be walking around the aisles in a constant state of bewilderment, he’ll be doing it inside of a body that is more balanced, more sound in a cardio-vascular way, and more lean than any of us. That’s because the hijacking of our food has led to a health crisis in the Western world.

Yet, not all toxins enter our bodies through the foods that we eat. There are, after all, a lot of pollen’s, molds, and dusts floating around in the air that we breathe.

Here are a few common examples:

  • Benzene from gasoline
  • Methylene chloride, from paint stripper
  • Perchloroethylene from dry cleaning facilities

Acid Overload

One of the most serious impacts of the influx of toxins into our bodies is that it has played havoc with our pH levels. The balance between an acidic and an alkaline liquid internal environment is the key determinant of our overall well being. The body functions optimally at a slightly alkaline state (pH level of 7.4). When the fluid within the body becomes too acidic, we compensate by leaching minerals from our organs, muscles, ligaments, and bones. This leaves those involuntary donor body parts susceptible to illness.

In order to correct our pH balance toward that magic number of 7.4, we need to remove acid from our systems. That means getting rid of the harmful toxins that we have ingested, either through our foods or through the atmosphere.

Get the lowdown on balancing your pH levels.

Why Detox?

Your body is constantly working. Even when you’re not eating, it’s digesting the food from a previous meal. That doesn’t leave much time for detoxing. It’s a bit like a commercial kitchen that’s going 24-hours a day. They’re so busy cooking, that they never get a chance to clean the oven or mop the floor. It’s only when they shut down production that they can clean the place up. A detox allows you to clean out your internal oven.

The main goal of detoxing is to eliminate toxins from your body. This will improve your energy, give your liver and digestive system a break, clear up your skin, improve your health, and help you to lose weight. It puts your body in a position where it can build, defend, and restore itself.

Just What Is a Detox?

The word detox means to cleanse the blood. This is done by removing impurities from the liver. That is where the toxins that we ingest are processed for elimination. The liver, however, is not the only detoxification center. So are the blood, the skin, the kidneys, the lymphatic system, and the lungs. However, these natural detoxification centers can easily get clogged up, preventing them from working properly. Detoxification is the process by which we clean up the internal house that we live in.

Keep in mind that a detox doesn’t mean fasting. Although a detox may involve a period of fasting, it is more about introducing foods that will assist you to flush out the toxins while giving your body a rest from your normal eating pattern.

Those nasty toxins have been hijacking your body for way too long. Now that you’re aware of it, it’s time to do something about it. There are a whole host of detox regimens that you can follow, and you should definitely do your own research to find one that suits your specific requirements.

If you are new to detoxing, you may choose to begin with a One Day Cleanse. This will give your body a chance to take a break from all of the pressure that it is under to make sense of the unnatural foods that it is being forced to cope with. You’ll need a juicer so that you can make soups and juices from the foods that you can consume. This is a great opportunity to dip your foot into the detoxing waters. It will be like giving you body a whole-day tune up.

  3. Some great advice on a simple body detox, I’m going to following your advice and suggestions and I’ll let you know how i get on!

Not looking forward to ditching the coffee in the mornings but willing to give it a try.

    1. Hi Mark,
I would be very happy if you let me know how your detox is going. It can take work but it is well-worth it. If coffee is a big problem try cutting back slowly or just try cutting your consumption per day to a minimum. We can take to many many things away at once and caused our body to go into a tail speed, so my suggestion is to add as many good foods as you can and take away the bad ones as much as possible. For some people taking the toxic foods has to be done slower than with other people. Listen to your body. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Looking forward to updates on your progress. Have a healthy, happy & blessed day.

  4. Could you tell me exactly what toxins will be removed from the body using this method. What will happen if someone never does a cleanse like this? Will their liver stop working?

    Thanks!
    Lisa

(PS: I worked in a 24 hour restaurant and there was a schedule for mopping floors, a rotation for cleaning grills etc…so everything got done every 4 hours.)

    1. HI Lisa.
No I cannot because everybody’s body is unique and it depends on what toxins you have in your body, how much exposure you have to toxins, what they are, how well your liver detoxifies on its own. Also factors like genetics play a part on how and what your body will eliminate by itself. I am not a professional health care provider and I highly doubt that even they could answer these questions either – just because no two people bodies function exactly the same. The important part is that you do try to eliminate as many toxins as you can by eating properly and detoxifying as much as you can. It is a personal choice that will and can improve your health. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Have a healthy, happy & blessed day!

  6. Interesting point of view Marla – Removing Alcohol – yes – but removing coffee i’m not sure I agree with.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that regular consumption of organic black coffee is great for your health, within moderation of course.

Are you suggesting we remove it just for the benefit of the detox (and hence, can re-introduce it later)…..or…..remove it for good?

    🙂

    1. HI Alex,
There is much controversy regarding coffee and if it is good for you or not. According to Dr Hyman, which I have a lot of respect for his opinion http://drhyman.com/blog/2012/06/13/ten-reasons-to-quit-your-coffee/ suggests that coffee should be eliminated from your diet especially if you have health problems. I am not saying my suggestions are right for every one but if you are trying to detox I would suggest that you at least eliminate coffee to detox and if you feel it is not a problem for you than adding it back in moderation to your diet is a choice that might work for you. I have read the health benefits of coffee and I myself feel for some people it might be helpful, but it does concern me when coffee drinkers can’t function with out their morning coffee.
I would say that you need to find what works for you and listen to your body. If coffee is something that you feel is helpful than drink it but I would suggest when detoxing to eliminate it completely.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting. It is always good to have other’s opinion and suggestions. Have a healthy, happy & blessed day. Marla
