As population and wealth continue to grow on the planet, sustainability is more important than ever we need to find eco-friendly swaps for everyday products. Plastic not only fills landfills and harms sea animals, it also hurts human health. As the need for sustainable products grows, the market is offering more alternatives to plastic, paper and other non-renewable materials. For almost anything you use that is non-renewable, you can find a biodegradable or reusable product instead. The more you utilize these products, the greater their supply and demand grow. If you want to promote sustainability  and self-reliance through the everyday products you choose, here are seven suggestions that make a great start.

1. Recycled Clothing

Eco-conscious apparel brands specialize in sustainable clothing made from recycled materials. They make the manufacturing process eco-friendly by taking harmful chemicals out of the equation and reducing water and energy use. Clothing made with organic cotton reduces the chemical load in the soil, as well as on your skin.

2. Reusable Cups and Bottles

Everyday beverage consumption creates a ton of paper and plastic waste, yet it’s one of the easiest fixes. Get yourself some reusable coffee cups and water bottles and take one with you wherever you go. Some shops, including Starbucks, even offer a small discount for bringing your own reusable cup.

3. Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper

Recycled toilet paper is another easy swap. The manufacturing of conventional toilet paper cuts down hordes of trees and puts bleach into our waterways. You can find eco-friendly toilet paper made from bamboo fiber or recycled materials to replace it, and you won’t even notice the difference.

4. Biodegradable Trash Bags and Produce Bags

Have you ever thought about how much plastic you throw away when you discard produce bags from the grocery store? How about the plastic you’re throwing away every time you take out the trash? Biodegradable bags remove environmental harm from the equation. They disappear altogether when placed into landfills, so you don’t have to worry about trashing the environment.

5. Solar-Powered Outdoor Appliances

Save energy by switching your outdoor appliances to solar-powered alternatives. You can find solar-powered grills, lawn mowers, fans and more that will help the environment while reducing your energy bill.

6. Silicone Teabags and Sandwich Bags

Silicone is an eco-friendly, durable, easy-to-clean alternative to disposable plastic and paper products. You can buy teabags, sandwich bags and other food and beverage containers made of silicone and use them again and again. They’re dishwasher-safe and come in all kinds of bright, fun colors.

7. Green Tires

Car tires are petroleum-based, so eco-friendly tires go a long way in reducing fossil fuel consumption. The petroleum-based rubber used in tires can be replaced with plant-based ingredients. Green tires are also made to have low rolling resistance (LRR), which reduces fuel consumption by lowering the amount of energy required to turn and roll the tires.

Easy Ways to Go Green and be Self Reliant

The easiest way to help out the environment in the long-term is to choose sustainable products to replace wasteful products you already use. You don’t have to go out of your way or make a sacrifice, because eco-conscious brands are creating better products than ever. This list is far from exhaustive, but making these seven switches is a great start. When you notice other wasteful products you’re using, you can always find an eco-friendly alternative with a simple Google search.
