Go Outside The Box When You Go Green!

Are you looking for ways to be a little more green? There are a huge variety of ways to go greener when living your life. For instance, you might think about switching from halogen bulbs to LEDs. It’s a great idea because LED bulbs don’t use as much energy, don’t get hot and last thousands of more hours. It’s a win, win, win, win scenario for you as a consumer. Particularly, if you are thinking about going festive, setting up fairy lights around your home. However, let’s be honest here, this isn’t revolutionary. LEDs have been on the market for some time, and it’s an idea for going green that is very firmly in the box. If we’re going to max your green, eco-friendly potential, we need to explore outside the norm. We’ve got a few ideas on how to do this.

How About Some Upcycling?

What is upcycling? Well, recycling is where you let the government sort out your waste. Upcycling is where you find usages for your waste at home, so you never have to actually get rid of it is in the first place. This is particularly important with waste that isn’t biodegradable. For instance, you can use paint cans for storage. Or even a waste can in each room of your home. You’re probably thinking, that doesn’t fit into my beautiful design aesthetic. Well, there’s nothing stopping you from dressing them up a little with pretty design features.

How about old shoes? You can use old shoes for flower pots. It looks rather quirky and quaint when you use this idea to decorate your garden. All you need to do is poke some holes in the bottom so that the plant’s roots have room to breathe.

What About Switching Your Mattress?

You probably didn’t realise this but you can actually buy a green mattress that could be rather useful. For instance, you can purchase a Loom & Leaf mattress. Made of organic and plant-based materials, it is good for you and the planet. You can see the best reviews here and learn more about why this particular mattress is so beneficial. Made of eco-friendly foams, the Loom & Leaf mattress is ideal for anyone looking to do a little extra, but there are certainly other organic, green mattresses to consider. As such, you shouldn’t just get tied down to one option here. Don’t forget that a green mattress isn’t just eco-friendly. It could also benefit your health!

Avoid The Junk mail

How much junk mail do you get every day? You might be surprised if you added it all up. In fact, you might discover that you get so much junk, you’re actually contributing to the loss of trees in the world. We know what you’re thinking. I can’t stop junk mail coming through my mailbox! Well, contrary to belief junk mail just doesn’t appear. If you’re getting junk mail, it’s probably because of you at some point, opted for the marketing. This might have been by accident, but the point stands that it was, at least on some level, your choice.

So, how do you fix this situation?

Well, we recommend that you consider now opting out. The easiest way to do this is to gather up all your regular junk mail and look at where it’s coming from. If it has your address on it, then it is being mailed by a company. Random people are not just posting it through your door. So, ring up these companies or, if you recognize them, log in to your accounts online. You will find a setting somewhere that talks about marketing through the post.

Now you can opt out completely or just switch to emails. Emails may be annoying, but at least they’re not contributing to the destruction of the world’s forests. As well as this, you might also want to opt for ways to go digital with some of the information that you regularly get through the post, like for instance, bank statements. First of all, let’s just remember that getting bank statements through the post isn’t exactly secure. It’s far better if you keep everything neat and tidy online. It will certainly save you a few hiccups and more importantly, paper.

Cut Down On Your Cooking Power

Let’s say that you’re cooking the family meal. Do you know how much energy that will cost you? Quite a lot that’s for sure and there is an easy way to cut down. You see, the problem with cooking is that ovens need to get very hot very quickly and that of course, uses a lot of power. Instead, you should use a slow cooker. You get the same result after a longer period, and you can easily get the meal for your family ready for the evening.

Or, you might be baking. Rather than firing up the oven, why not use a smaller, more energy-efficient, toaster oven. These are going to use a lot less power and will still provide enough energy for you to, say, bake a cake. Unless you’re baking a massive amount for a festive feast, don’t even bother turning the oven on.

Not Too Messy?

Unless your clothes are heavily stained or marked, there is no different between washing with hot and cold water. They won’t even dry quicker, this is a fallacy. So, rather than bothering to turn up the temperature on the washing machine to 100, keep it on the coldest setting. You would be amazed by the impact that this will have on your energy bill and in turn your impact on the environment.

Another tip for your washing would be to not use substances with added fragrances. They may make your clothes smell great, but they almost always have added substances that pollute the air and are terrible for the planet as a whole.

We hope you take this advice on board and use these wonderful, unique ways to become eco-friendly. You won’t regret making ? these changes, and you’ll be doing a lot more than most.

Do you have any tips to help all of us live green and eco-friendly?
