Green Technologies in Our Homes!

With my intent not to create harm to the environment and my focus on living sustainably, I chose to make green technology part of my life and focus on changes that will not waste but preserve nature. Besides the fulfillment that comes with doing good to the planet, becoming eco-friendly brings more health benefits to my life as well as financial ones.

Becoming eco-friendly is a never-ending journey because just like most of us are changing our ways and adapting for the sake of the planet so are the merchandisers and manufacturers to please their consumers, making green improvements far from over. Thanks to new and improved green appliances, materials and movements we can continue our green journey with excitement due to several options, presented to us regularly.

To make our homes eco-friendly we can rely on most green builders and manufacturers who focus on supplying consumers with eco-friendly technology that will curb the negative impacts of human involvement. Examples of these technologies offered by builders are

Sustainable roofs

When it comes to roof construction, there are several ways to go about in order for it become sustainable. This sustainability is due to the materials used by the builder to give the roof a durable and longer lifespan and by constructing the roof in such a way that allows it to produce and save energy.

Sustainable features on a roof include:

• Rooftop vegetation

• Roof-mounted solar tubes or panels

• A comprehensive storm water retention system

• High-efficiency roof insulation

• A high-performance roofing system

Solar power

Solar power is simply, converting energy from sunlight into electricity. This energy is applied to our homes by solar panels or tubes on top of our roofs. Nowadays, ones again thanks to the fast development of technologies, there are varies of solar power options one can use to charge smaller appliances in our homes.

If we dig a little deeper we will find a lot of neat and eco-friendly appliances that are making a trend and coming to the market every day to aid us in our green lifestyle. Here are just a few to get you excited about green living possibilities:

Eco-friendly toilets

The dual-flush toilets offer two different types of flushes where users can flush accordingly and in return save a large amount of water as well. Another great eco-friendly toilet is the toilet sink combo idea that takes recycling to a new level by making good use of your ‘gray water’, it lightly uses water from your bath or shower to flush your toilet.

Recycling made easy:

Turning unused food into compost can seem like a lot of work or time-consuming to some, but luckily to make life easier there are automated Food Recyclers on the market. They reduce food waste by over two-thirds its original volume and create ready-to-use fertilizer within 24 hours that you can spread on your lawn, outdoor plants, and garden. These trending food Recyclers are an easy-to-use solution for wasting less food by sending the leftovers to the land.

Keeping warm or cool with bedding:

One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home lighter on energy is by making sure your house is properly insulated. Insulation will keep you home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, therefore using less energy to heat or cool down. Insulation can save you up to 40% in electricity bills that occurs from heating and cooling. Other steps that we take to bring down those energy bills is to make sure we have the latest energy-efficient AC or fan in summer or heaters in winter, but during those cold winter or warm summer nights, something as simple as the bedding we sleep with can make a huge difference in our body temperature.

Many bedding manufacturers are turning green by implementing eco-friendly material into their production. These bedding companies are also designing innovative bedding products that balance your body temperature while you are sleeping, the products are able to absorb excessive heat when it gets to warm and free it back again when your body temperature needs to increase. In other words, next time when buying a new comforter or sheets, remember that there is an option to buy bedding that will regulate with your body temperature, encouraging you to turn down the AC or heater during night times to save some energy.

Bringing your plants and fish indoors

An indoor garden does not only give us fresh kitchen ingredients but also improves our air quality by filtering toxins that get trapped indoors. As for home aquariums, it is safe to say that they add to our home decor and bring a certain therapeutic calmness to our environment. So why not combine the two to make them part of your life. Instead of just settling the conventional indoor planting, why not consider an aquaponic. An aquoponic is an integrated system of aquaculture (your beloved goldfish) and hydroponics (your favorite herbs or salad). With a good setup, you can grow enough food to feed your family whatever greens they prefer.

Even though we know the basics of being green, it is not enough just to install those LED light bulbs, our goal needs to be to save energy in everything we do, making it part of our lifestyle. Today the going green movement is growing and every day new and exciting ideas are born to support it, mostly coming from innovative companies. Some companies “go green” either to cut environmental harm or to gain consumer support. Either way, they make our personal life in the green movement a bit easier and interesting.

  1. We a replanning a small extension turning an old barn that is attached to our house into a new kitchen. Whilst the place is disrupted doing that we are planning an underground rain water tank and the water will be used to flush the loos. We will also put in water heating solar panels and use as many reclaimed materials as we can. There is so much everyone can do to help the environment if only this information was made more readily available. #WasteLessWednesday

    1. HI Rosie,
It is amazing how many ways we can help preserve our environment and live healthier if we do our research and learn about it. I wish information was more readily available but things are changing slowly. I see more solar panels on houses or in people yards in the last 2 years than I ever have before. Glad to hear you are using solar panels and love the idea of using the underground water tank. Hope you get your new kitchen done soon so you can enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Love being part of #WasteLessWednesday

I’ve often wondered about those automated food recyclers. I guess they are great for people living in flats. We just have a composter in the garden.

We’ve just purchased a reusable battery charger unit and reusable batteries. I was fed up with the amount we seemed to go through every month. It’s only a small change but every bit helps right? #WasteLessWednesday

    1. Hi Gina,
You are certainly right about that every little bit helps. It is amazing how many batteries you can go through and reusable batteries can through time make a big difference in what in our landfills. Small changes add up over time and can make a substantial difference in our environment. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a healthy happy & blessed day!
