Skin defects are a normal part of many people’s lives. However, these defects can be unflattering and can lead to low self-esteem especially to those endearing to live up to expectations set by celebrities like Penelope Cruz. There is no cause to worry though. There are many natural remedies you can use to get back that glowing, beautiful skin.
Some of the common skin defects include Chigger bites, Fordyce spots, acne, shingles, psoriasis, hyperpigmentation, moles, hives, etc. Let’s look at some of these skin defects and the various natural remedies you can adopt to reduce or eliminate them.
1. Chigger bites
Chiggers are small, red mites that resemble spiders. They may be too tiny for some people to see with the naked eye. Contrary to common belief, chiggers don’t burrow into the skin and don’t feed on your blood. Instead, they inject salivary enzymes under the skin to liquefy it for easy feeding. It’s good to know that there are easy ways to get rid of chigger bites at home without too much effort.
• Take a hot shower
Chiggers may take a while before they find a place to latch on to excrete their saliva. You can take a hot shower an hour after exposure to remove them. Make sure to scrub using soap.
• Clean with baking soda
Mix water and baking soda to make a paste. Rub the paste on the skin and leave it there for a few seconds before showering. This method will sting, but it is better than the itching you are likely to experience due to the chigger bites.
• Rub with salt
Just like baking soda, this method will sting too. Mix salt with homemade vapor-rub salve and rub it in the wound. The vapor-rub contains menthol, which reduces the itching, while the salt reduces the itch by neutralizing the chigger’s spit.
2. Fordyce Spots
These are tiny red or white spots which appear on the skin’s surface. People tend to assume that the spots are contagious. However, they are neither contagious nor painful. Nevertheless, you should eliminate them since they make the skin look uneven and bumpy messing up your aesthetic appearance.
• Use garlic
Peel 4 to 5 garlic cloves. Crush them and use the paste to apply on the affected areas. After leaving the paste overnight, use cold water to wash it off in the morning. Repeat this procedure for several nights in order to eliminate the Fordyce spots completely.
• Use coconut oil
The lack of moisture causes the spots. Coconut oil’s natural moisturizing properties make it the right fit to treat them. Using swabs or cotton, apply the oil on the affected areas and wait for 20 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Repeat the procedure twice a day for an entire week to get results.
3. Shingles
Shingles are also referred to as herpes zoster. It is a viral infection caused by the varicella zoster virus and characterized by a painful rash. The same virus is responsible for chickenpox. One in three Americans will get shingles at some point in their life.
• Try healing baths
Mix two cups of cornstarch or colloidal oatmeal with the lukewarm bathwater and wait for 15 to 20 minutes. Avoid using warm water as the heat increases blood flow thus worsening the blisters. A cold shower can also help in soothing the skin, calming itchiness, and easing the pain.
• Mix water and baking soda
Mix water and baking soda to create a paste. Two parts baking soda and one-part water is recommended for proper consistency. Apply the paste to the affected area and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. Repeat the procedure several times.
• Use moist compress
Soak a plain cloth in water. After wringing out the excess water, use it to squeeze the affected areas gently. Just like a cold shower, the coolness will help to ease the pain. Do not use an ice pack since the coldness is likely to worsen the pain.
Skin defects may affect anyone. Even celebrities like Cameron Diaz have confessed to having skin defects. Although prescriptions can help eliminate the problem, they are expensive and are likely to cause side effects. For those looking to restore their skin the natural way, natural remedies are cheaper and equally effective.
